Online Safety
Technology is an important part of children’s lives and learning. At Blackfield Primary and Nursery School, we want children to enjoy the opportunities that the online world provides while developing the knowledge, confidence and judgement they need to use technology safely and responsibly.
Online safety is taught throughout our curriculum and forms an important part of our wider safeguarding work. Children learn about topics including privacy, passwords and personal information, respectful communication, online relationships, misinformation, inappropriate content and what to do when something online makes them feel worried or uncomfortable.
We also recognise that online safety works best when school and families work together. Technology, games, apps and social media change quickly, so we encourage parents and carers to have regular, open conversations with their children about what they are doing online.
Helping Your Child Stay Safe Online
There are some simple things families can do to help children develop healthy and safe online habits:
- Talk regularly about the games, apps, websites and videos your child enjoys.
- Take an interest in who they communicate and play with online.
- Use parental controls and privacy settings appropriate to your child's age.
- Check age ratings and restrictions before allowing children to use new games, apps or social-media platforms.
- Encourage children to protect personal information, including passwords, photographs and their location.
- Agree sensible boundaries for devices and screen time, particularly around bedtime.
- Remind children that not everything they see online is true or trustworthy.
- Most importantly, encourage your child to tell a trusted adult if anything online worries, frightens or confuses them.

Reporting an Online Safety Concern
If something has happened online which is causing your child concern, please speak to your child's class teacher or a member of our safeguarding team. We would always rather families speak to us early so that we can offer appropriate advice and support.
