Pupil Leadership

At Blackfield Primary and Nursery School, we believe that children should have a genuine voice in their school and opportunities to make a positive difference.

Pupil leadership is an important part of life at Blackfield. From Reception through to Year 6, children are given opportunities to represent others, take responsibility, contribute ideas and play an active role in our school community.

We want leadership to extend beyond a small group of children. Across the school, pupils can take on a wide range of roles linked to their interests, strengths and passions, developing important skills including communication, teamwork, organisation, responsibility and decision-making.

As children progress through Blackfield, the opportunities for leadership grow, culminating in Year 6 where pupils are trusted with additional responsibilities across the everyday life of the school.

Our Pupil Leadership Team

Our Pupil Leadership Team provides senior pupil leadership across the school. Working alongside our School Council and school leaders, they listen to the views of children, represent their peers and help shape improvements to school life.

We want our pupil leaders to understand leadership beyond Blackfield too. Previous teams have visited the Houses of Parliament, participated in community projects and led fundraising and charitable initiatives.

Leadership Opportunities for Everyone

We believe leadership should not be limited to a small number of children. Across Blackfield, pupils have opportunities to take on a range of roles linked to their interests and strengths, developing confidence and responsibility while making a positive contribution to school life.

Reading Ambassadors
Our Reading Ambassadors help promote a love of reading and encourage other children to enjoy and engage with books across the school.

Eco Leaders
Our Eco Leaders help us care for our environment and encourage children across the school to make positive and sustainable choices.

School Council
Our School Council represents the views of children in each class, sharing ideas and helping pupils have a genuine say in school life.

Play Leaders
Our Play Leaders help make break and lunchtimes active, enjoyable and inclusive by encouraging other children to get involved in positive play.

Learning Guides
Our Learning Guides help showcase learning at Blackfield and talk confidently to visitors about what it is like to be a learner in our school.

Digital Leaders
Our Digital Leaders champion the positive use of technology and support digital learning across the school.

House Captains
Our House Captains lead and represent their houses, encouraging participation, teamwork and a strong sense of belonging.

Wellbeing Leaders
Our Wellbeing Leaders help promote positive wellbeing and contribute to making Blackfield a caring and supportive place for everyone.

Radio DJs
Our Radio DJs develop their confidence and communication skills by helping to create and present broadcasts on our very own FAB FM radio station.

Additional Leadership Opportunities in Year 6

As the oldest children at Blackfield, Year 6 pupils are trusted with additional responsibilities across the school. These roles give children opportunities to demonstrate reliability, independence and service to their school community while acting as positive role models for younger pupils.

Prefects
Our Prefects are trusted role models who support staff and pupils and help uphold the high expectations we have for our school community.

VIP Party Assistants
Our VIP Party Assistants help us celebrate children's achievements by supporting our special weekly VIP celebrations.

Assembly Assistants
Our Assembly Assistants take responsibility for helping to prepare and organise the hall for whole-school assemblies.

Pupil Voice in Action

At Blackfield, pupil leadership is about much more than wearing a badge. We want our children to know that their ideas, decisions and actions can make a genuine difference to their school and wider community.

Over the years, our Pupil Leadership Team and School Council have been responsible for and contributed to a wide range of projects, including:

Harry Potter Reading Bus
Our pupils helped lead fundraising efforts to transform a double-decker bus into our unique Harry Potter-themed reading space.

Improving School Lunches
Children shared their views about our school meals and worked with staff to help influence changes to the lunchtime menu.

New Playground Equipment
Pupil leaders helped raise funds for new playground equipment and were involved in deciding how the money should be spent.

Supporting Our Local Foodbank
Our pupils organised collections for our local foodbank, with one initiative collecting an incredible 400kg of food for families in our community.

Random Acts of Kindness
Children have organised and taken part in initiatives designed to spread kindness throughout the school and wider community.

Caring for Our Community
Pupil leaders have taken part in community litter picks, helping children understand the responsibility we all have for looking after the area in which we live.

The Queen's Green Canopy
Our children helped plant more than 300 trees, making a lasting contribution to our local environment as part of the Queen's Green Canopy initiative.
