Design & Technology at Blackfield

At Blackfield Primary and Nursery School, we want children to become creative, confident and resourceful designers who can turn their ideas into purposeful products.

Our Design & Technology curriculum gives children opportunities to design, make and evaluate products that solve real and relevant problems. Children consider the needs of a particular user or audience, explore existing products and materials, develop their own design criteria and then create, test and improve their ideas.

As children progress through the school, they develop increasingly sophisticated practical skills and learn to work safely with a range of tools, materials, structures, mechanisms, textiles and electrical systems. They are encouraged to experiment, create prototypes, learn from things that don't work and continually improve their designs.

Cooking and nutrition are also an important part of our curriculum. Children develop practical food-preparation skills alongside an understanding of healthy eating, nutrition, ingredients and where food comes from.
