Reading at Blackfield
At Blackfield Primary and Nursery School, we want every child to learn and love to read.
Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. We provide children with an ambitious range of rich, high-quality texts that develop their vocabulary, knowledge and understanding of the world. Through reading, discussion and carefully planned teaching, children develop the fluency and comprehension skills they need to become confident, independent readers.
We want children to read widely and often, both to learn and for pleasure. As children progress through the school, they learn to think deeply about texts, make connections, explore different viewpoints and confidently discuss and explain what they have read.

Phonics & Early Reading
Learning to read begins with securing strong phonics and decoding skills. We teach early reading through Read Write Inc. Phonics, with additional support provided for children who need help to keep up or catch up.
