Writing at Blackfield
At Blackfield Primary and Nursery School, we want children to see themselves as writers.
Our writing curriculum is built around rich texts, meaningful experiences and purposeful opportunities to write. Children are taught to understand the important connection between reading and writing, drawing upon the vocabulary, structures and techniques they encounter as readers to develop their own writing.
Children learn to write for a range of purposes and audiences, making increasingly thoughtful choices about vocabulary, grammar, structure and style. Speaking and listening, oral rehearsal and high-quality modelling support children as they develop from supported writers into confident, independent writers.
Alongside composition, we explicitly teach the transcriptional skills children need, including spelling and handwriting, as well as the process of planning, drafting, editing and improving their work.

Speaking & Listening
Speaking and listening underpin children's development as writers. Through purposeful talk, discussion and oral rehearsal, children learn to organise and articulate their ideas, develop vocabulary and communicate confidently.
