History

History at Blackfield

At Blackfield Primary and Nursery School, we want children to become curious historians who understand the past and how it has shaped the world they live in today.

Our History curriculum begins with children's understanding of themselves, their families and their local area, before progressively developing their knowledge of British and world history. Children develop a secure understanding of chronology, make connections between different periods and explore how people, societies and events have changed over time.

Children learn to think like historians. They ask questions, explore artefacts and historical sources, consider evidence and investigate different interpretations of the past. As they progress through the school, they learn to think increasingly critically about the information they encounter and use evidence to develop and justify their own ideas.

Through History, we also encourage children to consider the experiences and decisions of people in the past. Children encounter different societies and perspectives, explore issues of equality and prejudice and develop an appreciation of the diverse world in which we live.
