Mathematics at Blackfield
At Blackfield Primary and Nursery School, we want every child to become a confident and proficient mathematician who understands the importance of mathematics in everyday life.
Our mastery approach develops children's fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills, enabling them to make connections between mathematical concepts and apply their knowledge in different contexts. Children are encouraged to explain and justify their thinking, using accurate mathematical vocabulary and developing confidence in talking about mathematics.
We use a concrete, pictorial and abstract (CPA) approach, providing children with practical resources and visual representations to help them develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts before moving towards increasingly abstract thinking. We value depth of understanding over acceleration and encourage children to persevere, learn from mistakes and develop confidence when tackling challenging problems.
Our Mathematics Curriculum
Mathematics – Intent, Implementation & ImpactWe use White Rose Maths to support the sequencing of our Mathematics curriculum. The White Rose small steps provide a carefully sequenced journey through mathematical concepts, while our teachers adapt teaching and resources to meet the needs of the children at Blackfield.
