Science at Blackfield

At Blackfield Primary and Nursery School, we want children to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about the world around them.

Our Science curriculum develops children's scientific knowledge alongside the skills needed to work and think like scientists. Children are encouraged to observe, investigate, question, explain and use evidence to develop their understanding of scientific ideas.

Through practical investigations and different types of scientific enquiry, children learn to make predictions, identify patterns, carry out fair and comparative tests, classify and group, observe changes over time and use secondary sources to answer questions. As they progress through the school, children develop increasingly precise scientific vocabulary and learn to use it confidently when explaining their thinking.

We also want children to understand the importance of Science beyond the classroom: how it has changed our lives, its importance to our future and the role that science can play in understanding and protecting our planet.
